In 2022, I had my first experience observing a black grouse lek in Sweden. It was a breathtaking moment, but at the time, I was still fairly new to photography. The experience left me inspired, so in 2024, I decided to revisit this fascinating spectacle, this time in Norway, with the help of a welcoming friend.
The arena itself required a bit of effort to reach, involving a hike into the mountains and an overnight stay in a tent. Over two days, we braved strong winds and snowfall, immersing ourselves in the rugged beauty of the Norwegian wilderness. While I had hoped for clear skies and a glowing sunrise to frame the scene, the harsh conditions created a unique and memorable experience in their own right.
There’s something truly magical about witnessing the black grouse in their natural habitat—listening to their bubbling calls and observing their intricate displays against the raw backdrop of the mountains. Moments like these remind me that nature’s beauty lies not only in perfect conditions but in the unpredictability and resilience of the wild.
