In November 2023, I had the privilege of visiting Dovrefjell National Park in Norway with two dear friends. Our goal was to explore the rugged landscape and photograph the iconic musk oxen for the first time.
Musk oxen, with their thick coats and prehistoric appearance, are perfectly adapted to survive the harsh conditions of the Norwegian mountains. These incredible animals, which have roamed the earth for thousands of years, are now primarily found in isolated regions like Dovrefjell.
During our two-day stay, we were met with overcast skies and no sun, much like my experience photographing the Siberian Jay the day before visiting dovrefjell. Despite the challenging light, we were fortunate to have several close encounters, both with solitary males and larger groups. Observing these powerful yet surprisingly calm creatures up close was an unforgettable experience.
As it was my first visit, I focused primarily on capturing portraits. I realize I played it a bit safe, opting for traditional shots rather than experimenting with creative compositions. This is something I plan to approach differently when I return to Dovrefjell in February 2025. With winter’s dramatic light and snowy landscapes, I hope to bring a fresh perspective to my photography of these magnificent animals.
Dovrefjell has left a lasting impression on me. It’s not just about the musk oxen, but the sense of vastness, isolation, and the raw beauty of the mountains. I can’t wait to return and further explore this magical place.
