The world is filled with exotic destinations, but Sweden holds its own as a hidden gem for wildlife enthusiasts. Over the past year, I’ve felt a growing desire to dedicate more time to exploring Sweden—and Scandinavia as a whole—as a nature photographer. The country’s unique wildlife and landscapes offer countless opportunities to capture extraordinary moments.
In early summer 2024, I ventured into the Swedish mountains for the first time as a nature photographer, visiting Flatruet. This easily accessible destination is home to a remarkable diversity of birdlife, with many species found within a short distance. The highlight of my trip was undoubtedly witnessing the displays of ruffs and great snipes. The great snipe, in particular, left an unforgettable impression on me. Their otherworldly calls echoed through the chilly, zero-degree air, yet the cold faded into insignificance as I stood mesmerized by their intricate display. Whether you’re an avid birder or not, witnessing the great snipe’s performance is nothing short of one of nature’s true wonders.
On our way back, we made a stop at Nipfjället, hoping to encounter the Eurasian dotterel. Unfortunately, 2024 wasn’t my year to see them, but the beauty of nature lies in its unpredictability—every trip brings new experiences and lessons.
Exploring Sweden’s wilderness has reminded me how much there is to discover close to home.
